A London Olympics that started with a whimper for Michael Phelps has been a big bang ever since, including Thursday, when he increased his most medals record to 20 by besting American rival Ryan Lochte in the 200-meter individual medley.Lochte said these Games were “my time” after he opened by winning the gold medal in the 400 individual medley. He also said Phelps, who finished fourth in that event, would come back more determined than ever.Lochte was wrong about the first, right about the second.Phelps earned his 16th gold medal by handled the field in a time of 1 minute, 54.27 seconds, just off his winning time in Beijing. The silver went to Lochte and Hungary’s Laszlo Cseh took the bronze. So his final Olympics that looked bleak at the start look golden now. He was not as dominant as he was four years ago in Beijing. But his medal count this year rests at two golds and two silvers in five races – and he still has two more events to go.In fact, as soon as Phelps finished off Lochte, he hopped out of the pool and headed to the nearby diving well to warm down, knowing he still had a semifinal of the 100 butterfly before the night was done.Lochte had gone through the same routine just a few minutes earlier, trying to pull off an impressive double 31 minutes apart. He came up short in both races, fading to bronze in the 200 backstroke behind fellow American Tyler Clary, then touching after Phelps in the medley.Phelps’ reaction wasn’t a water-pounding celebration, just look of relief. He seemed to be soaking it all in, relishing a gold of his own in London with his previous victory coming in the 4×200 freestyle relay.Lochte shook hands with his rival before crawling out of the pool for the last time at these Games. In a symbolic gesture, he tossed his cap and goggles into the crowd, his work done. His final tally: two golds, two silvers, one bronze and a fourth-place finish — impressive, but undoubtedly shy of what he had predicted would be “my time.”
F+W Media has morphed a joint venture with Hoffman Media into a full-on acquisition, buying Hoffman’s Martha Pullen Company, which serves the sewing and craft markets. Key to the deal was Martha Pullen’s e-commerce and fulfillment operations.Transaction terms were not released, and while F+W certainly expands its footprint in the sewing market—the company serves a variety of enthusiast verticals—the deal gives F+W direct ownership of hard-good inventory and fulfillment. Up to now, F+W had been facilitating inventory and fulfillment through third-party partnerships.”Hard goods are defined as things like patterns, wool, fabrics, buttons and beads,” F+W CEO David Nussbaum tells FOLIO:. “We had only limited experience with these hard goods before, but we’re now moving a little more aggressively into that type of distribution.” F+W counts e-commerce as a major revenue stream, the company has made a concerted effort to move away from a reliance on advertising. At the recent Dealmakers Summit, hosted by media bankers DeSilva + Phillips, Nussbaum said, “Three years ago I put a call out to the team to become the Amazon of passion markets.”Nussbaum says e-commerce-related revenues jumped 75 percent in 2011 and expects similar growth in 2012. The relationship between Hoffman and F+W goes back to May 2011 when the two companies partnered in a joint e-commerce venture creating a Martha Pullen online store. According to the companies, year over year sales grew more than 40 percent, and sales are now trending 25 percent over prior year sales. Since the partnership, store visits have increased 96 percent. Those metrics opened the door to discussions of an acquisition, one that Hoffman EVP and COO Eric Hoffman says will allow his company to focus on its core food and women’s lifestyle markets. Brands at Hoffman include Cooking With Paula Deen and Southern Lady.Sale proceeds, says Hoffman, will be used for share buybacks and to fund organic growth plans. Also included in the deal are Sew Beautiful magazine, 10 consumer and trade events, relate websites, DVDs, books, sewing pattern subscription programs and the “Martha’s Sewing Room” TV show.

Karan OberoiInstagramTelevision actor and singer Karan Oberoi, who was accused of rape and blackmail by a female friend, has been granted bail on Friday, June 7 by the Bombay High Court. The high-profile case has had many twists and turns, giving rise to the debate on the #MenToo movement as far as sexual harassment is concerned.Karan Oberoi had been arrested for the alleged rape and blackmail of a female astrologer in Mumbai on May 6 and sent to 14 days’ judicial custody. In a very filmy twist to the tale, the complainant was attacked and it turned out that the goons attacking her were sent by her own lawyer, Ali Kashif Khan. On June 3, Khan surrendered before Oshiwara police. He was arrested and later granted bail by the Andheri court.Karan Oberoi’s friend and actress Pooja Bedi was the first to come out in support of him, saying he has been victimised by a woman who was in love with him. Karan’s sister Gurbani aka Vani, and his band members from Band of Boys, Sudhanshu Pandey, Chintoo Bhosle and Sherrin Verghese also spoke for him at a press conference soon after his arrest.Reports said the complainant had met the accused via a dating application in 2016, after which he promised to marry her. A report in Mumbai Mirror, without naming the actor, had said that the Oshiwara police had registered a first information report (FIR) against the actor-singer for allegedly raping an astrologer under the pretext of marrying her. The victim has also alleged that he had recorded a video on his mobile phone. This happened after he allegedly sedated her with spiked coconut water in his flat. He later allegedly extorted money from her.Much of this has turned out to be a conspiracy after the accused submitted WhatsApp chats with the complainant, clearly showing her one-sided interest in him and that he had never promised to marry her. Vani also confirmed that Karan and the complainant were never intimate.Karan Oberoi acted in the recent web series Inside Edge. He was also seen in the popular TV series like Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin and Saaya, apart from singing with Band of Boys.
