This isn’t a plea from Swift to her fans specifically (she is known for her extremely close and mutually supportive relationship with her fanbase), but to all fans of female artists generally to celebrate and support women succeeding in the genre, rather than relentlessly dragging one another and creating drama where there is none. You Need To Calm Down is here to serve as your official reminder that pop queendom, like so many other things in life, is not a zero-sum game. By all means worship and support your fave, but don’t forget: They ALL got crowns, don’t step on their gowns. The 2018 year in tech, movies and Taylor Swift (CNET… null Share your voice Global superstar Taylor Swift has deftly been showing haters the door since around 2010 when she released Mean, an iconic banjo-powered critique of her detractors. In her latest song, You Need to Calm Down (the video went up Monday morning), she’s turned her attention to highlighting the hate being thrown around the internet between fans of female pop artists. It’s nothing new to see brilliant women being compared as though they’re inadvertent players in some kind of anti-feminist Top Trumps game. But frequenters of Stan Twitter, where the most ardent music fans hang out, can sometimes take things to a whole new level.”Enjoy your problematic fave,” is a popular refrain. “Sis can’t even sing,” an average retort. Then there are the “retweet for Ariana Grande, like for Beyoncé,” popularity contests and their many variants. And just like that, appreciation for female musicians and their vast bodies of work is reduced to an arbitrary, inexact and petty form of one-upmanship.These examples are on the vanilla end of the spectrum, but hint at the specific brand of aggression between fans that perpetuates the myth that there’s only so much room at the top for women and a fight to the death is required to decide the winner. But as Swift, one of pop’s true superstars, points out in You Need To Calm Down, this kind of thinking is just a myth. Most people’s biggest takeaway from Swift’s song (released Friday) is the overt stand she takes against homophobia. But she’s also inserted another important lesson into the lyrics that shouldn’t be overlooked, and that’s to stop pitting successful female artists against one another online.”And we see you over there on the internet/Comparing all the girls who are killing it/But we figured you out/We all know now we all got crowns/You need to calm down,” she chants in the bridge. There are no losers when women succeed, Swift seems to suggest. Except perhaps those who are getting caught up in dragging each other’s faves online. In the music video, Swift takes this message one step further. On a stage decorated with a “Pop Queen Pageant” banner stands a lineup of the world’s biggest female pop artists (represented by drag artists): Nicki Minaj, Adele, Cardi B, Katy Perry, Beyoncé, Adele, Lady Gaga and of course Taylor Swift herself. RuPaul in his role as judge proceeds onto the stage with a crown on a velvet cushion, but rather than presenting to one star or another, he instead flings it into the air with glee. Taylor Swift/YouTube The video ends with former adversaries Perry and Swift (the actual pop stars, not their doppelgangers) — dressed as a burger and fries respectively — hugging it out with peace-at-last energy. This is more than a public reconciliation — it’s two role models setting an example for the rest of us. It also reiterates that while fans might be out there trying to pit females stars against one another, most of them are actually pretty good friends, rendering stan wars pointless and unnecessary. Close Apple announced that it will be buying Intel’s cellular modem business for $1 billion. The transaction is expected to close by the last quarter of 2019. The acquisition would include a corporate exchange of about 2,200 employees from Intel with the transfer of IP and equipment to Apple. The envelope to the deal will enclose about 17,000 wireless patents on protocols for cellular standards, modem architecture, and operations. The deal also signs amendments stating that Intel will be allowed to develop modems for PCs, IoT devices and autonomous vehicles. The iPhone major though signed the deal with Intel; it will rely on Qualcomm’s hardware until the patent license agreement of six years between the two companies comes to an end.Apple had been using hardware from both, Intel and Qualcomm till last year when they closed a deal with Qualcomm to solely produce cellular modems for their devices. Intel had been struggling since then without any buyer for its products. Apple CEO Tim Cook launches the Apple March 2019 event. Courtesy apple.comApple had been trying to relieve itself from all third-party collaborations and focused on in-house manufacturing of the modems. It has been working on the modem technology for years through its research and development (R&D) centres in San Diego.According to some reports, the iPhone manufacturer will be able to complete its research and development to produce its own modems by 2022. So, there might be good news for the users as the research and development on modems might bring variations in the i-devices. 3-D printing has made waves in industries from fashion to space to biotech. It’s also poised to radically transform the way we think about and prepare food.Image credit: Modernist Cuisine | Vimeo That was the takeaway from a talk on the future of 3-D printing given Wednesday at the Tribeca Film Festival by 3D Systems’ chief entrepreneur officer Ping Fu, who announced that the company will be launching a consumer chocolate 3-D printer this year.3-D printing technology is already being used by high-end chefs — she shared a video of an elaborate 50 course meal prepared by the Modernist Cuisine’s Nathan Myhrvold that integrated 3-D printed elements — but has yet to go mainstream.Video credit: Modernist Cuisine | VimeoFu predicts that will soon change. “I believe the food printer will be the first one that is going to be adopted in everybody’s home,” she told the audience, painting a picture of a near-future where cooking a meal is redefined as designing it on a computer and then printing it out in the kitchen. “3-D printing will allow delicious nutritious food with great presentation to be delivered locally.”Related: How a 3-D Printer Just Gave This Little Girl an Awesome, New Prosthetic HandIt will also allow individuals to ‘cook’ for friends and family members remotely. When her daughter was growing up, Fu often had to work late at the office. She wanted to somehow still cook her dinner, a futile fantasy. At least, it was back then. “With a 3-D printer, this is totally possible,” she said. We’re still a long ways from 3-D printing entire meals, and Fu understands that for many people, 3-D printing dinner may feel like cheating, replacing a messy, joyful social process with a cold and clinical one.She urged the audience to keep an open mind. Replacing cooking with 3-D printing doesn’t necessarily make the process less social. Just instead of collaborating in the kitchen, families will “co-create” around the computer.
