A 36-year-old man has appeared in court facing 91 charges relating to social welfare fraud including offences in Letterkenny social welfare offices.Martin McDonagh of 4 Railway Court, Newtownbutler in Co Fermanagh appeared before Harristown District Court this morning. The offences – which amounted to tens of thousands of euro – were committed in post offices across the country including Cavan, Letterkenny, Kells, Ballinamore and Carrickmacross. Rob Smith announced his resignation as head coach of the Humboldt State University football team during a midday press conference at Baywood Golf & Country Club on Tuesday. The resignation comes a month after Smith, along with HSU President Lisa Rossbacher and Interim Athletic Director Duncan Robins, announced that the football team would live to see a 2018 season.The resignation, according to Robins, will not take effect until Friday. Then I showed them a list of behaviors that make you transactional (every phone was lifted up to capture that single slide for future reference).I explained how most salespeople (and as many sales organizations) don’t really understand their business strategy. Since they don’t know, they compete on price–even when that’s not their competitive advantage.I shared with the salespeople, sales managers, and sales leaders that they have a moral imperative to create more value, as well as the equally important charge of capturing some of the value that they create as profit. That profit is what allows you to deliver the outcomes that you sell, and it allows you to innovate and create new, higher levels of value.I shared the idea that many salespeople and sales organizations are allowing their dream clients to underinvest, never disabusing them of the big lie that they can produce the outcomes of better and faster while also being cheaper.One person asked the question as to what they should do if their dream client doesn’t have the money. I told him that they do have the money. They have the money for everything that they believe is critically important, things that are tied to their strategic outcomes. But if I am wrong, he should help them with whatever budget they have and then build the future projects with them, delivering the outcomes they need over time.Salesforce is doing a lot to build a great sales conference. We are infinitely creative, and equally resourceful. We are always seeking ways to improve things. Right now, technology is delivering these improvements at a blisteringly fast pace. What’s new may offer improvements in some areas, but success is often found in older, deeper truths.Last week I was forwarded an email from a salesperson. She wrote, “You would appreciate this guy’s persistence.” The only problem with her email was that there was no “guy.” Instead, the string of emails was an automated campaign pretending to be communication.There is nothing wrong with automating some communication, but there is something missing when that communication needs to create a human connection, to create a preference, and to allow the salesperson to gain an appointment. Imagine if your spouse called the florist and ordered flowers to be delivered to you every year on the same date. There would be a certain efficiency, but a massive lacking of effectiveness.In human relationships, trust is the currency. Efficiency, in many cases, is the elimination of caring and the exclusion of intimacy when it comes to relationships.The technologies we use allows us to communicate over great distances. Being able to use hardware and software for meetings has made meetings easier—and in many ways—more effective. Distance is no longer a barrier. The ability to see one another has improved communication.But your digital presence, while being much greater than an email or phone call, is no match for your physical presence. Presence, showing up, actually being in the room with people is still far more powerful, still more effective, still creates a greater connection and intimacy, and still creates a preference.Stay aware of the new technologies and use them where and when they make sense. But don’t lose sight of the fact that over the long term, the advantage you gain is far greater when you focus on older, deeper truths. Things like integrity, character, trust, intimacy, resourcefulness, determination, and accountability will do far more to improve your overall results where human beings are concerned.
