One killed during clash over Facebook post in Rangpur

Photo: Moinul IslamA man was killed and 20 others including four policemen injured in a clash between law enforcers and locals at Thakurbari village in Sadar upazila of Rangpur on Friday over a youth’s Facebook post ‘demeaning’ Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PUBH), reports UNB.Additional superintendent of police (Circle A) Saifur Rahman said Titu Chandra, a resident of Thakurbari village, has posted a picture in his Facebook account with derogatory remarks about Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PUBH).Over the issue, several hundred people gathered at Pagla Pirer Bazar, adjacent to Thakurbari village, after Juma prayers and started chanting slogans demanding immediate arrest of Titu Chandra, he said.Later, around 8,000 people from nearby villages thronged the bazaar and marched towards Thakurbari village, a Hindu-dominated village.Reaching the village, the angry people vandalised and torched 8-10 houses of the Hindu community, the additional SP said.On information, police rushed in, charged baton, fired rubber bullets and lobbed teargas canisters to disperse the agitating people, leaving six people injured with bullets.One of the injured — Hasan — died while being moved to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, Saifur said.Later, the angry mob blocked Rangpur-Syedpur road and vandalised several moving vehicles.Saifur said additional police personnel were called in to bring the situation under control.last_img read more

Mentally challenged girl raped in Sirajganj

first_img.A mentally challanged girl was raped allegedly by a local youth in Joypura village of Shahjadpur upazila in Sirajganj on Friday, reports UNB.The accused is Momin Munna, 22, a college student and son of Amirul Islam of Joypura village.Officer-in-Charge of Shahjadpur police station said Munna pounced on the victim when she went to fetch a goat from the bank of the Jamuna river on Friday evening.As she was late to return home her grandmother went to look for her and found Munna violating her, but he eventually managed to flee.Being informed, village leaders tried to settle the matter in arbitration but failed.Later on Sunday victim’s father filed a case with Shahjadpur police station over the matter.last_img read more

Youth stabbed to death at Baidyabati station

first_imgKolkata: A youth was stabbed to death in broad daylight by some unidentified miscreants. The incident took place on platform number 1 at Baidyabati station in Hooghly on Tuesday.The Railway police have arrested two persons in this connection so far. According to the police, the victim, Joyprakash Das, a resident of Champdani area in Hooghly, was standing at the station on Tuesday afternoon when he got engaged in an altercation with some other youth. A scuffle soon broke out between the youth and other accused. One of the group members suddenly took out a knife and stabbed him. Locals rushed the victim to Srerampur Welsh Hospital where he was declared brought dead.The body has been sent for post-mortem. After starting an investigation, the railway police have arrested two youth in this connection so far.They have been identified as Raju Das and Pradhan Das. According to the preliminary investigation, police suspect that the victim had a relationship with the wife of Pradhan Das. The accused are also residents of Champdani area. Police are yet to confirm the exact reason behind the incident. A senior official of the railway station said a murder has taken place on the platform.
