Taylor Swift takes a stand against online fan wars over female artists

first_imgThis isn’t a plea from Swift to her fans specifically (she is known for her extremely close and mutually supportive relationship with her fanbase), but to all fans of female artists generally to celebrate and support women succeeding in the genre, rather than relentlessly dragging one another and creating drama where there is none. You Need To Calm Down is here to serve as your official reminder that pop queendom, like so many other things in life, is not a zero-sum game. By all means worship and support your fave, but don’t forget: They ALL got crowns, don’t step on their gowns. The 2018 year in tech, movies and Taylor Swift (CNET… null Share your voice Global superstar Taylor Swift has deftly been showing haters the door since around 2010 when she released Mean, an iconic banjo-powered critique of her detractors. In her latest song, You Need to Calm Down (the video went up Monday morning), she’s turned her attention to highlighting the hate being thrown around the internet between fans of female pop artists. It’s nothing new to see brilliant women being compared as though they’re inadvertent players in some kind of anti-feminist Top Trumps game. But frequenters of Stan Twitter, where the most ardent music fans hang out, can sometimes take things to a whole new level.”Enjoy your problematic fave,” is a popular refrain. “Sis can’t even sing,” an average retort. Then there are the “retweet for Ariana Grande, like for Beyoncé,” popularity contests and their many variants. And just like that, appreciation for female musicians and their vast bodies of work is reduced to an arbitrary, inexact and petty form of one-upmanship.These examples are on the vanilla end of the spectrum, but hint at the specific brand of aggression between fans that perpetuates the myth that there’s only so much room at the top for women and a fight to the death is required to decide the winner. But as Swift, one of pop’s true superstars, points out in You Need To Calm Down, this kind of thinking is just a myth. Most people’s biggest takeaway from Swift’s song (released Friday) is the overt stand she takes against homophobia. But she’s also inserted another important lesson into the lyrics that shouldn’t be overlooked, and that’s to stop pitting successful female artists against one another online.”And we see you over there on the internet/Comparing all the girls who are killing it/But we figured you out/We all know now we all got crowns/You need to calm down,” she chants in the bridge. There are no losers when women succeed, Swift seems to suggest. Except perhaps those who are getting caught up in dragging each other’s faves online. In the music video, Swift takes this message one step further. On a stage decorated with a “Pop Queen Pageant” banner stands a lineup of the world’s biggest female pop artists (represented by drag artists): Nicki Minaj, Adele, Cardi B, Katy Perry, Beyoncé, Adele, Lady Gaga and of course Taylor Swift herself. RuPaul in his role as judge proceeds onto the stage with a crown on a velvet cushion, but rather than presenting to one star or another, he instead flings it into the air with glee. Taylor Swift/YouTube The video ends with former adversaries Perry and Swift (the actual pop stars, not their doppelgangers) — dressed as a burger and fries respectively — hugging it out with peace-at-last energy. This is more than a public reconciliation — it’s two role models setting an example for the rest of us. It also reiterates that while fans might be out there trying to pit females stars against one another, most of them are actually pretty good friends, rendering stan wars pointless and unnecessary. Uganda landslide kills at least 34

first_imgDamaged housing is seen after a landslide in Bududa, Uganda, in this still image taken from video on 12 October 2018. Photo: ReutersAt least 34 people have been killed after a river in eastern Uganda burst its banks, sending thick sludge and rocks barrelling into homes, disaster officials said Friday.Rescue teams were picking through the rubble, looking for survivors and victims of the disaster which took place on Thursday in the town of Bukalasi in the Bududa district. An unknown number of people were still missing.“I can confirm 34 people are dead. We have to wait for our assessment to be completed before we can say how many are missing,” said Uganda Red Cross spokeswoman Irene Nakasiita. On Thursday she shared photos of the scene of what she described as a “massive landslide” on WhatsApp, including images of dismembered corpses caked in mud laid out by the river. Some of the bodies had been partly covered with banana leaves by members of the public.“The cause was the river bursting its banks upstream following heavy rain. When the water flowed down it brought a number of big stones with it that destroyed people’s houses,” said Nakasiita.“Our search and rescue team is still on the ground evacuating people and removing them from the rubble.”She said the Red Cross was sending relief supplies to the area, such as tarpaulins, blankets and water purification tablets.Nathan Tumuhamye, director of an organisation that helps communities recover from natural disasters and conflict, told AFP that “four to five villages”, and possibly a primary school had been affected.“I have received the sad news of landslides wreaking havoc in Bududa District, killing a yet-to-(be)specified number of residents. The government has dispatched rescue teams to the affected areas,” President Yoweri Museveni wrote on Twitter.“The government will look at the other options available to stop further occurrences of these disasters.”Bududa district in the foothills of Mount Elgon, which lies on the border between Uganda and Kenya, is a high risk area for landslides. At least 100 people were reported killed in a landslide in Bududa in March 2010, and in 2012 landslides destroyed three villages.Government efforts to move vulnerable people to neighbouring districts have faced resistance from residents.According to Tumuhamye some early warning systems for floods and landslides have been established in the area but without the capacity to respond to the warnings the systems have not helped residents escape disasters.last_img read more

SatPy 0100 python library for manipulating meteorological remote sensing data released

first_imgSatPy is a python library used for reading and manipulating meteorological remote sensing data and writing them to various image/data file formats. Last week, the team at Pytroll announced the release of SatPy 0.10.0. SatPy is responsible for making RGB composites directly from satellite instrument channel data or from higher level processing output. It also  makes data loading, manipulating, and analysis easy. Features of SatPy 0.10.0 This version comes with two luminance sharpening compositors, LuminanceSharpeninCompositor and SandwichCompositor. The LuminanceSharpeninCompositor replaces the luminance via RGB. The SandwichCompositor multiplies the RGB channels with the reflectance. SatPy 0.10.0 comes with check_satpy function for finding missing dependencies. This version also allows writers to create output directories in case, they don’t exist. In case of multiple matches, SatPy 0.10.0 helps in improving the handling of dependency loading. This version also supports the new olci l2 datasets used for olci l2 reader. Olci is used for ocean and land processing. Since yaml is the new format for area definitions in SatPy 0.10.0, areas.def has been replaced with areas.yaml In SatPy 0.10.0, filenames are used as strings by File handlers. This version also allows readers to accept pathlib.Path instances as filenames. With this version, it is easier to configure in-line composites. A README document has been added to the setup.py description. Resolved issues in SatPy 0.10.0 The issue with resampling a user-defined scene has been  resolved. Native resampler now works with DataArrays. It is now possible to review subclasses of BaseFileHander. Readthedocs builds are now working. Custom string formatter has been added in this version for lower/upper support. The inconsistent units of geostationary radiances have been resolved. Major Bug Fixes A discrete data type now gets preserved through resampling. Native resampling has been fixed. The slstr reader has been fixed for consistency. Masking in DayNightCompositor has been fixed. The problem with attributes not getting preserved while adding overlays or decorations has now been fixed.
