Jamaican Tallawahs collapse to give Tridents a narrow win

(Photo by Ashley Allen – CPL T20 via Getty Images) A dramatic batting collapse by the Jamaica Tallawahs middle order, instigated by some accurate bowling from the Barbados Tridents was key to the Tridents emerging victorious by 12 runs in third match of the 2017 Hero Caribbean Premier League in Lauderhill, Florida. On a difficult pitch for batting Shoaib showed his experience and skill to score 33 off 27 balls. The searing heat appeared to take its toll on Simmons though. He was run out immediately after the dismissal of Shakib. He mis-judged a single and could not reach his crease when Nicolas Pooran threw down the stumps. On a tough pitch for batting Simmons was the only player who managed to score with fluency. He hit powerfully down the ground for his 53 off 46 balls. The Tallawahs collapse begun in the twelfth over when Andre McCarthy was trapped leg before wicket by a googly from Imran Khan leaving them 77 for 2. Shakib Al Hasan was caught behind in the next over placing pressure on Simmons. Tallawahs collapse Up until those last two overs the Barbados Tridents innings never really got going with batsman finding it difficult to time the ball. Great Tridents’ bowling Despite losing Kumar Sangakkara in the first over of their run-chase the Tallawahs appeared on track to chase down the Tridents first innings total of 142 with Lendl Simmons anchoring the innings. However, the Tridents bowlers never let the Tallawahs get away in the first half of the chase. Although the Tallawahs seemed in command they always required an acceleration, which never came.center_img Simmons’ dismissal changed the complexion of the run-chase. When Jonathan Foo was dismissed shortly afterwards the Tallawahs faced an uphill task, requiring 61 off 41 balls. Perhaps the difference between the two teams lay in the final two overs of the Barbados Tridents innings when some powerful hitting and wayward death bowling took 25 off the last two overs, elevating the Tridents from 117 for 6 to 142 for 7. Imad Wasim and Roman Powell kept the Tallawahs within touching distance but when Powell was superbly caught on the mid-wicket boundary by Kane Williamson the match was put beyond them. The pick of the Tridents bowlers were the spinners, Khan—who took 1 for 9—and Akeal Hosein—who took 2 for 24. Williamson was the first player dismissed, caught at mid-wicket from the last ball of the Powerplay. The muscular power of Dwayne Smith brought him four early boundaries but he eventually fell victim to the accuracy of the Tallawahs bowlers, trapped leg before wicket by Shakib. Match beyond reach Shoaib and Pooran threatened to build a substantial partnership after Smith’s demise but Pooran’s attacking instincts got the better of him. He attempted to hit a third off side boundary in quick succession and was out, leaving the Tridents 74 for 3. The Tridents then lost Kieron Pollard and Christopher Barnwell to Imad Wasim in the same over. From that point on the Tridents had to adjust their expectations and Shoaib batted with restraint until the 18th over when he skied an attacking shot off the bowling of Kesrick Williams. It was then that Wayne Parnell and Hosein bludgeoned the late runs which proved to be crucial.last_img read more

Reggae Girlz Vow Not To Represent Jamaica Because of Unpaid Salaries

first_imgKINGSTON, Jamaica – Jamaica’s historic women’s soccer team, the Reggae Girlz have vowed that they will not play another soccer match for Jamaica until they are paid their salaries from this summer’s world cup campaign.Several members of the Reggae Girlz team, namely Bunny Shaw, Trudi Carter, Ashleigh Shim, Chinyelu Asher, Havana Solaun, Toriana Patterson, Allyson Swaby, and Lauren Silver, took to social media to announce the strike, with an image that read “No Pay No Play”.Reggae Girlz star player Khadija “Bunny” Shaw, under her Instagram post, wrote:“First Caribbean team to qualify for a World Cup. We have made a lot of sacrifices to wear the colors of Jamaica. We have respected and worn the colors with pride. We are in a position where we are literally fighting just to get paid by legal agreements. This ain’t just about money, it’s about change, change in the way women football is viewed especially in Jamaica. We deserve more and they can do better. For this reason, I along with my teammates won’t be participating in any future tournaments until being paid.”The JFF President, Michael Ricketts responded to the allegations of unpaid salaries, saying he does not know what could have possibly prompted a strike. According to Ricketts, the players are owed US$120,000 and half that amount was transferred through Sagicor Bank last week.During that time, team manager Jean Nelson had been in communication with the players informing them that some money had been transferred to their accounts and that the balance would be paid once they received the US$750,000 earned at the World Cup, to be paid at the end of September. But the players have insisted that they have not been paid the US$60,000 that Ricketts claimed to have been sent. “My teammates and I have not received any money. Our agreement ended on August 30 and today is September 2 and there is nothing pending,” Lauren Silver. In anticipation that they would not have been paid in a timely manner, the Reggae Girlz have come together, forming their own union to contest the JFF’s claims. No Financial Support From The JFFThe Reggae Girlz were the first Caribbean team ever to qualify for a FIFA Women’s World Cup earlier this summer, and received an outpour of support from fans all over the world for being the underdogs of the tournament. Another aspect of the Reggae Girlz journey that gained worldwide media attention was the lack of financial support they received from the JFF.While the winners of the Women’s World Cup, United States were vocal about receiving equal pay, Jamaica’s team were also battling the same issue. The Reggae Girlz have been completely cut off TWICE by the JFF, receiving no support for jerseys, training gears or other necessities. Many of the girls had to work other jobs to support themselves, only practicing when they could get time off.The change came when Cedella Marley, daughter of Bob Marley, stumbled upon the Girlz team, heard of their financial difficulties and decided to help.Marley, along with Alessandra Lo Savio, a co-founder of the Alacran Foundation, which does philanthropy work in Jamaica, and head coach Hue Menzies (who took on the job without a salary), gave the Reggae Girlz the financial and mental support they needed to make the 2019 Women’s World Cup.Despite the support they receive from Marley and company, the team still struggles financially and the JFF has not done enough to prove that they are in support of the team.last_img read more

Haitian President Says “It Would Be Irresponsible to Resign” Despite Protests

first_imgPORT AU PRINCE, Haiti, CMC – Embattled Haitian President, Jovenel Moise, says he has no plans of encouraging another 1986 incident: when then-president of Haiti Jean-Claude “Baby Doc” Duvalier fled the country following opposition-led demonstrations against his administration.Moise, speaking for the first time publicly for nearly a week, said that it would be “irresponsible” on his part to step down in light of persistent demonstrations being staged by opposition parties for his removal from office amidst claims of corruption.“It would be irresponsible on my part for me to stand here today, to sign and submit a letter of resignation and say ‘I am leaving’ and leave the country like this and the system regenerates itself,” Moïse told an impromptu news conference on the grounds of the National Palace. The crisis in Haiti was triggered by the publication in January 2019 of a report on the Venezuela-funded PetroCaribe Oil initiative, under which Caracas provided oil and other petroleum products to Haiti under a preferential agreement.Moise has denied any wrongdoing and last week named former prime minister Evans Paul to head a team that would hold discussions with all stakeholders and on Tuesday reiterated a call for the all stakeholders to meet to discuss a way forward.“However long it takes, I am ready for dialogue. We don’t want to have another 1986,” he said, noting also that the economic situation in the country is also as a result of the failure to have his government ratified by the Parliament.“Parliament spent eight months refusing to give us a government,” said Moïse, who came to office in 2017.Moïse said Haiti is “worse off” than it was from 2004 to 2015, the years following the ouster of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide.“You didn’t vote me to come fight with anyone. You voted me so that I could come fight against a system. It would be difficult for anyone who became president today to confront this system because it has the capacity to regenerate itself,” Moise said as he defended his term in office so far.But opposition leaders have immediately rejected Moïse’s bid for talks, saying his offer was “not credible” and called for more street protests. In a statement, the anti-corruption organization, Nou Pap Dòmi said Moise “must resign.“He has no credibility and has long lost our trust. Our position remains the same: A corrupt president can’t govern our nation.”Opposition leader André Michel said the latest statements by Moise lacked credibility.“Mr. Jovenel Moise does not have the moral authority to attack the guards of the exclusionary system that we are fighting today because his election campaign was betrothed by these people,” Michel said, adding that during the 2016 elections Moïse “had at his disposal more economic means than all the other candidates together”.last_img read more

ABB comes to the defence of FOBTS

first_img Share Related Articles Talking to Paddy O’Connell on BBC Radio Four last Sunday (3 September), The Association of British Bookmakers CEO Malcolm George said that a ‘pan industry solution’ is required if Britain wants to solve problem gambling. George details that the ‘personal interaction’ and ‘face-to-face interaction’ that is utilised in betting shops from shop staff who are able to build a stronger connection with customers, often wouldn’t be received in other forms of gambling. George commented: “A bookmakers is probably one of the safest and best environments to identify problem gamblers and engage with them face to face and point them in the direction to get the help they clearly need.”“Betting shops are in decline, there are 300 fewer betting shops this year; the levels of profitability and the stability of jobs in betting shops is declining, this is not an industry that is growing.“I believe that all the evidence has come out that has clearly demonstrated that if you want to shift the problem, absolutely hammer bookmakers, if you want to solve the problem, come to a pan industry solution that actually sees everyone in the industry doing what they can to identify and get help to problem gamblers.”George added: “A problem gambler walks out of a betting shop, goes down the road into an amusement arcade, walks across the road into a casino, then maybe goes online. Now if you want to reduce betting shop problem gambling numbers, then fine ban these machines, it will reduce the numbers, but will you see amusement arcade machine and casino numbers go up, almost certainly. “What we have seen over 20 years, is between half and one per cent of the population having a gambling problem. In that time, online has arrived, fixed odds betting terminals in bookies have come in and the numbers stay the same.”The interview followed on from the record breaking £7.8 million fine received by 888 for failing to protect vulnerable gamblers, when due to a technical failure with the site, customers who had self excluded from managed to deposit and gamble onto the site.
