The Wisconsin Badgers will take the field at Camp Randall Stadium Saturday to match up with the Minnesota Golden Gophers in college football’s longest rivalry — 115 games and counting. Accompanying the team on the sideline this year will be Paul Bunyan’s Axe.Most UW students probably remember Jonathan Casillas’ punt block and Ben Strickland’s recovery in the end zone to not only snatch victory from the Gophers last year at the Metrodome, but to maintain possession of Paul Bunyan’s Axe, which the Badgers had claimed the year before. Saturday, the Badgers will look to begin their third year in possession of the trophy. The Axe is the trophy used to symbolically capture the essence of the annual struggles between the Badgers and Golden Gophers, and this contest is one of 16 trophy games involving Big Ten Teams.Of the 16 traveling trophy games, 12 feature rivalries between two Big Ten schools; both totals far and away surpass any other conference in the nation. The Southeastern Conference has eight rivalry games that present trophies to the winner and the Big 12 has six.According to Scott Chipman, Big Ten Conference director of communications, the first season of Big Ten football was in 1896, which has given schools an awful long time to heat up their competitive juices.”Rivalries tend to be formed over time,” Chipman said. “The fact that the Big Ten has been playing football for over a century means that border battles and other rivalries have had a lot of time to not only develop, but become embedded in the cultures of some universities.”Kyle Coughlin, the director of communications for the athletic department at Minnesota, said it’s impossible for universities not to develop heated rivalries with schools they play on a consistent basis, and the trophies are simply added to give the games some more emphasis.Incidentally, the Gophers are involved in a quarter of the Big Ten’s trophy games. Now that Big Ten football is in full swing, it seems like U of M is always playing in some kind of rivalry game. It seems like they’re always playing for a trophy. Well, that’s not far from true, as up to half their conference games in any given season could involve a trophy. Along with UW, the Gophers’ other trophy opponents are the University of Iowa, the University of Michigan and Penn State.Coughlin defended the number of trophies U of M can play for, saying it’s about tradition.”When you’re a charter member of the Big Ten Conference, there’s a lot of history there and a lot of football,” Coughlin said. “For example, Minnesota and Wisconsin is the longest rivalry in college football, they’re going to be playing their 116th game this Saturday. Trophies merely serve to highlight the fact that it is a big rivalry.”Paul Bunyan’s Axe fashions the contrasting colors of the rival universities, and has been presented annually to the victor in the rivalry since 1948. Interestingly, according to releases from both university athletic departments, before the Axe became the trophy, bacon was originally awarded to the victor. In 1930, a doctor from Minneapolis created the Slab of Bacon to match the Little Brown Jug, which goes to the winner of the Michigan-Minnesota game. The idea behind the slab was that the Wisconsin-Minnesota winner would “bring home the bacon.” According to Coughlin, though, the bacon mysteriously went missing in the early ’40s, and the Axe replaced it a few years later. The Little Brown Jug, currently in Michigan’s possession, dates back to 1903. Coughlin said the jug trophy originated as a spat between Michigan’s and Minnesota’s athletic departments.”The Little Brown Jug tradition began when Michigan’s coach, Fielding Yost, left his water jug on the field after a game in 1903,” he said. “Yost sent a letter to Minnesota, asking for the jug back, and L.J. Cooke, head of the athletics department, wrote a letter challenging Yost to win it back.”Another personal-rivalry trophy for U of M is the Floyd of Rosedale, which resulted from a quarrel over crowd control between Minnesota and Iowa’s respective governors. The governors bet each state’s prize pigs before the 1935 showdown.”The great thing about the Floyd of Rosedale is that it was originally a real pig,” Coughlin said. “But because the pig died about a year later, they decided to make a bronze trophy to replace the real pig.”U of M’s other trophy game, which they lost in a heartbreaker last weekend to PSU, does not find its origins in some kind of personal rivalry or even a border battle. This Governor’s Victory Bell was created on Sept. 4, 1993, simply to commemorate the Nittany Lions’ first Big Ten Conference game. While a trophy started in 1993 would be considered recent by a conference rivalry’s standard, the Victory Bell does not hold the distinction of the Big Ten’s baby trophy. That distinction belongs to the Heartland Trophy, which was created in 2004.The 2-year-old trophy, according to Iowa athletic communications director Phil Haddy, came into existence because UW athletic director Barry Alvarez and U of I athletic director Bob Bowlsby just decided there needed to be a trophy for the annual contest.”The two athletic directors just got together and came to the decision that there should be a trophy to go along with the game,” Haddy said. “The rivalry has been competitive, and it happens every year, so why not have a trophy representing the rivalry?”Though the majority of the Big Ten trophy games are between conference rivals, four of the inter-conference trophies qualify to be eligible to be trophy rivalries due to the fact that they are border battles and intrastate rivalries. The intrastate rivalry trophy is the Cyhawk Trophy, created in 1977, and is awarded to the victor in the contest between the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Iowa State Cyclones. Haddy said the rivalry between Iowa’s two schools became so intense, that the athletic directors of the respective universities agreed to create a trophy to represent the spirit of the rivalry.Notre Dame and Purdue also compete in an intrastate (Indiana) rivalry for the Shillelagh Trophy. This trophy is a woman who carries a football with the symbol of the victor engraved on it, along with the score of the game. ND’s football communications director Brian Hardin explained the origin of the trophy.”A fisherman from Indiana who always followed the teams decided to carve the Shillelagh Trophy in 1957,” Hardin said. “He wanted a platform to display the results of the games each year, so he decided to make the trophy.”The Fighting Irish are involved in one other Big Ten trophy game. ND snagged the Megaphone from Michigan State this season in a mind-numbing collapse for the Spartans. This border battle trophy was created in 1948 at a “friendly foe” party.According to Hardin, Irish and Spartan alumni typically get together before games and boast of their schools’ greatness. During one of these parties in 1947, an MSU alumnus challenged an ND alumnus and the trophy, which was a true cheerleading megaphone with the colors of both universities, was created. Hardin said the megaphone represents the banter going back and forth between schools.Of lesser note, since both Indiana University and the University of Kentucky haven’t had a competitive football team in the longest of times, the Wildcats-Hoosiers border battle presents the winner with the Bourbon Barrel.

By Chris Rotolo |Democrats won a prized U.S. Senate seat, maintained command of the 6th Congressional District and took full control of the governing body in Red Bank, but had little else to celebrate in the Two River area.Despite victories by Sen. Bob Menendez, U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone Jr. and the Red Bank’s Democratic ticket of Mayor Pasquale Menna, Kate Triggiano and Hazim Yassin, it was the Republicans who ruled the day in Monmouth County and the greater Two River Area, a victory heralded by county GOP chairman Shaun Golden.Just before midnight at a podium inside the American Hotel of Freehold where Republicans had gathered to celebrate, Golden was joined by U.S. Rep. Chris Smith, who had successfully defended his 4th Congressional District seat against Democrat Josh Welle. According to unofficial tallies posted by the county clerk, Smith received 53 percent of the 171,100 votes cast, and Welle received 46 percent. Also at Golden’s side were Republicans Gerard Scharfenberger and Sue Kiley, both of whom won election to the county Board of Chosen Freeholders.Scharfenberger, who was appointed to the freeholder board in January to fill a seat vacated by Serena DiMaso, received 125,055 votes to hold off Democrat Larry Luttrell, who collected 115,365 votes in the race for a one-year unexpired term.Kiley earned 122,165 votes to Democrat Amber Gesslein’s 108,946 votes to secure a full-term on the board. Independent candidate John P. Curley, a current freeholder seeking re-election, logged 10,943 votes.Golden not only cited record voter turnout for the success of the freeholder candidates, but their collective efforts to inspire voters to trek to their polling stations in the face of inclement weather.According to Golden, Scharfenberger and Kiley visited approximately 40,000 county households and made 127,000 phone calls to county residents in the past year.“They didn’t stop walking all year, from the St. Patrick’s Day parade in March through Election Day, and because of those outreach efforts, they touched a lot of people,” said Golden in an election night interview with The Two River Times.Scharfenberger is a Middletown resident who served as the township’s mayor six times during his service on the governing body between 2007 and 2017. Kiley is the sitting deputy mayor in Hazlet Township, where she shouldered the mayoral role in 2017.Golden said their experience allowed the candidates to stand apart from the rest.“We had two incredibly hardworking candidates with not only significant political experience, but significant life experience,” Golden added. “Gerry’s done a really nice job so far on the freeholder board and Sue will be a great addition, too.”Kiley cited a return of dignity to the open seat she won as an aspect of her campaign that resonated with voters, referencing the troubles that befell the former Republican freeholder Curley, and the sexual harassment investigation that prompted the board to censure him in December.“The fact that we can restore dignity to the seat I won tonight, and the fact that Gerry and I already work so well together, not to mention the track records that we bring with us, I think all of this added up in the eyes of the voters and helped us win the day,” Kiley said in a post-election interview with The Two River Times. This article was first published in the Nov. 8-14, 2018 print edition of The Two River Times.

MONTEBELLO – One of the most outspoken critics of Montebello’s City Council will finally get a dose of his own medicine: the chance to feel the heat of public scrutiny.Community activist Jeff Siccama won one of three open seats in Tuesday’s election, his second attempt to join the fray of city politics.Mayor Bill Molinari, the sole incumbent, and Rosie Vasquez, the wife of outgoing Councilman Ed Vasquez, won the other two seats. For years, Siccama has criticized the council – and Molinari in particular – from the safety of the podium during the public comments portion at regular meetings. He routinely has requested documents in order to monitor council actions, and Siccama has been an active member of Montebello Citizens for Open Government – a residents’ group that has accused council members of keeping secrets.“I’ve been a watchdog for the City Council,” Siccama said Wednesday. “I just wanted to make sure things were done right and problems with the Brown Act brought to the attention of council. I’ve been speaking on behalf of the people and looking out for them. They need to trust their council members.”Siccama said he would have no problem working with his former adversary.“I’m a team player, so I’ll work with the entire council, of course,” Siccama said. “As long as they’re doing what’s right for the community, I’ll go with it. But if it’s for special interests, then I won’t.”Molinari declined to comment for this article.Siccama said he wants to see Montebello become moreproactive in getting information to residents about city actions.“I want to keep closed-door sessions to a minimum,” Siccama said. “I would like to begin with televising City Council meetings and updating the Web site with financial and budget information. And I want to include decisions made in past meetings.” [email protected](562) 698-0955, Ext. 3029

The study found the chest strap monitor to be the most accurate, at 99 percent success rate. The Apple Watch came second, with a success rate of 90 percent. That might seem like a major slump from 99 percent, but it far surpasses the other wearables tested, which were in the low 80s.As intensity increased, the Cleveland Clinic found that accuracy decreased across the board. That is partly due to wearables tracking blood flow to determine heart rate, which can be inaccurate.Resting heart rates fine, but Apple won with activity“What we really noticed was all of the devices did not a bad job at rest for being accurate for their heart rate, but as the activity intensity went up, we saw more and more variability,” said Dr. Gordon Blackburn, one of the study authors and director at the Cleveland Clinic. “At the higher levels of activity, some of the wrist technology was not accurate at all.”Fitbit has commented on the study, pointing out that its wearables are not medical devices and provide much more comfort than the chest strap monitor. The company also said that internal tests showed 94 percent success rate, though those tests remain undisclosed.Wearables have become far more accurate in the past few years, but Cleveland Clinic’s study clearly shows there’s more work to be done. Some of it can be ironed out by removing false positives after the data has been collected, but to reach 99 percent wearable providers need to upgrade sensors or look beyond the wrist. Fault lines were visible in the State Congress on Wednesday over the party high command’s reluctance to extend a helping hand to the Shiv Sena to form a government in Maharashtra. A large group of the party’s 44 elected MLAs is in favour of backing the Sena if approached by the saffron party. Despite discussions between the party’s leaders in the State, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar and Congress president Sonia Gandhi, the high command is of the opinion that the Congress should sit on the Opposition benches. The decision has upset several newly elected MLAs, old and young, and the State leadership is now forced to pacify their anger. The younger lot is unhappy over Maharashtra in-charge Mallikarjun Kharge’s blunt comments against aligning with the Sena without seeking the opinion of elected representatives. ‘Baseless speculations’State Congress president Balasaheb Thorat, however, has denied any such discontent within the party. “While we believe that the people’s mandate is against the Bharatiya Janata Party in this election, it is up to the high command to decide the party’s position. We work as per the party ideology under the leadership of Soniaji Gandhi. The speculations are baseless and hold no truth,” he said. The denial notwithstanding, the State Congress leadership convened a meeting late on Wednesday to discuss how to pacify the disgruntled MLAs. Six MLAs to whom The Hindu spoke were in favour of joining an alternative government, irrespective of the Sena leading it. ‘Ayodhya no roadblock’“The Ayodhya verdict is going to be a court decision and every party will have to accept it, irrespective of its political stand. That cannot be the roadblock [to forming a government with the Sena]. Similarly, the Congress has received the Sena’s support in the past. Nobody objected to it then,” said one MLA, on the condition of anonymity. The MLAs said they will accept the high command’s decision, but said it will be after taking elected representatives’ opinion.Party secretary and State in-charge Ashish Dua, meanwhile, said the leadership can take the decision only if it receives a proposal from the Sena. “All this talk is in vain as there is no such proposal. How can our leadership decide whether to support the Sena or not before that?” he asked, dismissing reports of discontent within the party.
